Like, we literally got soaked at Schloss Hellbrunn.

Alas, we have entered the homestretch of our time in the idyllic town of Salzburg, but we continue to see and do so many things in and around the town known to the world as the location of The Sound of Music. We got to see some more of the filming sites as we wandered around this week. We’ve had favorable weather most days, and when it hasn’t been as favorable, we’ve been able to busy ourselves with indoor activities. Check out some of our favorite photos from this past week!

When we first arrived at the palace in Bad Ischl, I was taken aback by how small but breathtaking it was. The standout yellow palace and perfectly set flowers made for a pretty picture!

This a piece of coffee cake that Emma got at Zauner Café in Bad Ischl. Going to the cafe with friends was a great relaxing stop in the day and a good way to stay out of the rain!

At the palace in Bad Ischl, I (Haley) could not help but to swing on the large swings they had! It felt good to simply be a kid again and have some fun.

The gang tried Guinness for the first time at the Dubliner Irish Pub. It was a delicious beer that paired well with the big sloppy burgers and fries.

Emma and friends went to Werfen, Austria to visit the ice caves and the Sound of Music Trail. This picture was taken at the end of the trail which is where the “Do Re Mi” scene was filmed in the movie!

One of Salzburg’s specialties is a melange coffee! This picture was taken at Café Bazar, one of Grace’s favorites in town.

Here is a view of the city of Salzburg from one of the windows in the Salzburg fortress. The hike up to the top was a little tricky because of the incline, but the views were totally worth it!

Haley finally got to see the Horse Pond – one of the fountains used in a few scenes of The Sound of Music!

The top of the Hohensalzburg Fortress provided some beautiful sights of the Salzburg Old Town!

The Hellbrunn residence (Schloss Hellbrunn) is a summer palace built with trick fountains that spray the guests walking past. During the tour, students were squirted with water out of singing and dancing fountains.

The most unique discovery of our Schloss Hellbrunn adventure was the Steinernes Theater. This theater is entirely composed of rock formations, and operas and plays are still performed here today. As a thespian, it was absolutely mind-blowing to set foot on this stage. It gave me a real sense of how live theatre was originally performed in its purest form.

Yes. This is the Gazebo. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer danced and sung in this very structure! Did I mention how much I loved exploring Schloss Hellbrunn!?

Another Sound of Music themed picture, because we visited Schloss Hellbrunn which also is the site of the gazebo from the Sound of Music. Here, Emma and Erin are re-enacting the “16 going on 17” scene with Liesl and Ralph.

The gazebo was not the only site we visited during our Hellbrunn outing. Here is a picture of Emma and Lauren before we went on the tour of the trick fountains and gardens. Little did we know that we would get wet during the tour because of the trick fountains!

The Hellbrun palace was full of intricate art and beautiful paintings. It was a nice place to dry off after encountering the trick fountains in the gardens.

We found a hidden hiking path at Schloss Hellbrunn— the former summer palace of the Prince Archbishop. You can see the gardens below, and the fortress that sits atop Salzburg in the distance. The view was definitely worth the hike!

Grace and Haley walked all over Salzburg this past Saturday; they decided to stop by the gardens for some relaxation and pretty views.

A group of us enjoyed the terrace views from the Cathedral towers and were lucky enough to capture a beautiful shot together!

Kelley encountered an example of Austria’s darker side while exploring the old city the other day. Here marks a spot where the Nazis orchestrated a book burning after they gained control of Austria. The horrid consequences of fascism must never be forgotten to prevent atrocities, like the ones committed by the Nazis, from ever happening again.

After a month in Salzburg, the lock bridge still remains Grace’s favorite spot for a view of the city. Grace has enjoyed her time here and wishes she could take some of Salzburg home with her.
